Champlain Hudson Power Express Seeks Contractors for Project Construction

Request for Proposal Issuance Marks Important Step in the Project’s Development

Transmission Developers Inc. (TDI) today announced that the Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) project has taken another important step forward with the release of a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning of the project.

The RFP was sent out to the major engineering construction and manufacturing corporations that have experience in building large High Voltage direct current transmission projects throughout the world. TDI is seeking a lead contractor for a turnkey contract to manufacture and install the 350 miles of cables and the 1,000MW converter station in Yonkers required to complete the CHPE project. Proposals are expected to be submitted in November.

This is the first step in the contractor selection process will help to refine the cost of construction for the project and also help define how many local jobs will be created. TDI will be meeting with the numerous contractors who will be bidding on this RFP over the next weeks and months and looks forward to selecting its partner to construct the project. Construction is scheduled to commence in September of 2011 with an in service date of 2015.

TDI President and CEO Donald Jessome said, “This is an important day as it allows TDI to select its partner to build this important energy infrastructure project in New York State. It also allows TDI to substantially finalize its cost of construction and to develop its manpower requirements through the construction period. TDI is committed to working with the many unionized trades within New York State to provide the needed skills to bring this project from the drawing board to implementation.”

The Champlain Hudson Power Express was announced in February 2010. The line will originate at the U.S.-Canadian border and deliver up to 1,000 MW of primarily new hydro and wind power to New York. This clean power will help meet growing demand, increase the security of the electric grid, and reduce energy costs for consumers and businesses. More information on the project is available at
