Construction of the Champlain Hudson Power Express® (CHPE) began on November 30, 2022, and all major construction work was completed in January 2026. CHPE is expected to enter service in late spring of 2026, with restoration activities along the project route continuing into the summer.
The CHPE project uses safe, reliable, time-tested high-voltage direct current (HVDC) energy transmission cable technology that transmits power over long distances more efficiently than alternating current (AC) transmission.
CHPE HVDC cables were installed for ~339 miles underground and underwater from Lake Champlain at the U.S-Canada border to a converter station in Astoria, Queens. At the converter station, HVDC power will be converted to AC power so it can be injected into New York City's energy grid for local distribution.
